My Favorite Video Game Themed Metal: Last Chance To Reason

placeholder

I’ve talked about a couple other video game themed metal bands so far: Unraveller, and Knight of the Round. While these bands are awesome in their own ways and relate to video games different, my favorite video game themed band has to be Last Chance To Reason.

I love me some progressive metal, and these guys deliver. They have everything that makes good progressive music: interesting chord progressions, constantly changing time signatures, great effects, technical prowess over their instruments, and thought provoking lyrics. I cannot count how many times I have listened to their Prosthetic Records debut, Level 2. It is a perfect blend of my two passions: progressive music and video games.

Level 2 was an especially ambitious project because they were also creating a game to go along with the album. It was a shoot ’em up called Level 2. I have never been able to find if the game ever got finished or not, but you can download and play the demo which includes the first level set to the first track “Upload Complete” here.

Last year they released their most recent album, Level 3. I am unsure as to whether this follows the same narrative as Level 2, but regardless, this album is on par with it’s predecessor. Everything that made Level 2 great returns in this album and they even push the envelope on a lot of these. What has me the most excited about this album is that it was pressed on vinyl and I plan on picking it up very soon.

On top of all of this, their drummer, Evan Sammons, has his own classic gaming column on the blog MetalSucks called Level Up. It was his piece on The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver that prompted me to pick up a copy for my Dreamcast. I highly suggest checking it out here, along with the rest of his column.

I haven't gotten around to playing it yet, but I'm really excited to.

If I’ve piqued your interest, be sure to check them out below. If you like what you hear, give ’em a like on Facebook and purchase their albums to support them so they can make more awesome music.

What do you think of them? Who is your favorite video game themed band? Have a suggestion for a band for me to check out and write about in the future? Let us know in the comments below!

Jarrod’s first console was a Playstation back in 1997 and has been gaming ever since. After years of being stupid and selling most of his games and consoles, he started game collecting in 2013. His main focus is the original Playstation but is interested in most consoles. Between gaming and his record collection it’s almost guaranteed that he’s going to be poor.
